Mother Soldier
Percussion Trio
Mother Soldier is a music performance for three percussionists. The performance stems from both historical and personal experiences of becoming a mother in a world full of war. Through music, choreography and costume design, Mother Soldier leads the audience through a series of tableaux: we see and hear women marching, we see them in doubt, in grief and in care, and we follow them in battle for their children.
The musical expression of the performance draws on war's own aesthetics by incorporating and reworking marching music, which historically is a musical style created to communicate orders and encourage battle. In Mother Soldier, the heavy march drum is exchanged with a light frame drum and the cymbal is replaced with a gong hanging around the performers’ neck. The full sonic potential of these instrument are explored.
“A moving, wordless tale of women in war”

"The performance feels new and necessary in the choir that speak the different voices of women.”
- Bastardblog, 2024
"No military band would march so loose, with such syncopated and dripping drum beats and with such lyrical sounding cowbells. Such a juxtaposition of war and motherhood is only possible in the world of art."
